The two most significant characters, after Scarpetta, are Lucy and Marino. The rest of the characters are fairly realistic. Kay Scarpetta is impossibly, unrealistically, and absolute good. But some time the lines become just blabber of technical slangs making it difficult to understand for common readers like me.Ĭornwell is good in constructing characters.

The series is extremely informative about psychology and forensic investigation. The books of the series are generally well written in the boundary of being a genre/best seller book. Is there someone manipulative and sneaky on the inside? Meanwhile something suspicious is going inside the academy.

Basil is a convicted compulsive murderer (Benton avoids the term serial killer). So they have a long distance thing going on, which turns rocky some time.īenton is conducting a psychological study of dangerous serial offenders, Prefrontal Determinants of Aggressive-Type Overt Responsivity or in short PREDATOR, hence the name of the book.īenton is interviewing Basil Jenrette as part of PREDATOR programme. He is a forensic psychologist and in this book he is working in McLean Institute in Massachusetts.

The academy gives training on forensic science to the people related to law and judiciary. With the money she establishes a forensic training center named The National Forensic Academy, in Hollywood, Florida.

Lucy becomes extremely rich selling her software programmes. Lucy may have glimpses of the other fictional character Lisbeth Salander. Lucy goes through phases of troubled times, where she spirals down to the path of self destruction. She is a genius so far as computer software goes. Lucy is lesbian and her sexual orientation creates trouble for her in FBI. The series covers Lucy’s journey from a sulking child to brooding teenager to her troubled FBI days to finally a successful business woman. Scarpetta has a sister who is unstable and unfit to be a mother so Scarpetta has been taking care of her sister’s daughter Lucy since Lucy was a child. He is depicted as a troubled and flawed character. But unlike the usual leads in detective contents, he is not pure heroic material. He is good in his job and generally great as a partner. In case of Scarpetta the police detective is Pete Marino. It is almost customary in fictional contents of forensic investigation genre to have a police detective partnering with medical examiner. In fact Cornwell has published one culinary recipe book consisting of Scarpetta’s special Italian recipes. In many books there is detail narration of her cooking method of delicious Italian dishes. Scarpetta is brilliant, top notch in her job, meticulous, and a great cook. Her character is supposed to be based on former Virginia Chief Medical Examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro. Kay Scarpetta first appears in Postmortem (1990) as Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia. Some thing like we see in procedural dramas like CSIs, Bones, and Criminal Minds. The books have lots of technical narration of forensic science and psychology profiling of the murderers. She works on high profile serial killer cases.
Kay Scarpetta is a medical examiner and also specialises in psychology. Recently I decided to revisit one of her books, PREDATOR (2005). But I have not read the books since some time. Once upon a time I used to read Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta series a lot.
